The ECHR Turns 70 – Taking Stock, Thinking Forward

The Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, better known as the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), was opened for signature in Rome on 4 November 1950. The Human Rights Centre wants to take the opportunity of its 70th anniversary to take stock of its history and to think about its future.

We had originally planned for an international conference in November 2020. However, due to Covid-19, the Conference is going to take place on 24-26 November 2021 in order to give the best chance to our participants to meet face to face. There will be a very rich and diverse programme, with the response to our call for papers having led us to accept no less than 150 papers.

We still want to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Convention in November 2020. To this effect, we are organising a smaller, bespoke, event. In particular, we are delighted that the European Court of Human Rights’ President, Judge Spano, and former President of the Court, Judge Sicilianos, will be in conversation with our Director, Professor Eva Brems on 20 November 2020. This will be streamed on-line.

Further information for both the bespoke event and the conference will be posted here in due time.
