Charlotte Vercammen's Bio

Charlotte is a PhD researcher at the Programme for Studies on Human Rights in Context at Ghent University. She is also part of the editorial team of the Human Rights in Context Blog and serves as Editorial Assistant for the Law and Criminology Journal published by the Faculty of Law and Criminology at Ghent University.

With a background in political science, her research explores the intersection of politics and law in Ecuador and Peru, focusing on the impact of urgent measures—both precautionary and provisional—adopted by human rights bodies to protect individuals deprived of liberty. Despite the existence of international legal mechanisms, such as urgent measures from the Inter-American Human Rights System, these protections often remain unmet in practice.

A key contribution of her work is its gender perspective, analyzing how gender influences the impact of these measures in practice. Charlotte graduated summa cum laude with a Master of Science in Conflict and Development Studies and was selected for the Think & Talk honours programme at Ghent University. As part of her master’s thesis on child labour, she conducted fieldwork in Ecuador in 2022.
