SHORT BIO

Katrijn Vanhees is a PhD Research Fellow at the Human Rights Centre, with a scholarship of VLIR-UOS. After finishing her studies in History at Ghent University (2011), she completed her Masters in Law (2014).

The PhD project focuses on women’s land rights in Rwanda. The research tends to investigate the underlying causes of women’s restricted access to land in Rwanda by studying the gender-based division of socio-economic power and resources in the household and the local community as a whole. In addition, it will analyze how this gender bargaining concept is approached by the Abunzi committee, the local judicial forum.
