Dr. Katrijn Vanhees is an affliliated researcher at the Human Rights Centre. In December 2019, she successfully defended her PhD thesis at Ghent University. She obtained a PhD scholarship of VLIR-UOS.
The PhD project focused on women’s land rights in Rwanda. The research investigated the underlying causes of women’s restricted access to land in Rwanda by studying the gender-based division of socio-economic power and resources in the household and the local community as a whole. In addition, it analyzed how this gender bargaining concept is approached by the Abunzi committee, the local judicial forum.
