The human right of access to infertility care

Infertility is a global public health issue with significant human rights implications. In human rights terms, infertility affects sexual and reproductive rights (SRR), the right to health, women’s rights and disability rights. This study proposes a contribution to the development of a human rights-based approach to infertility, with a particular emphasis on the needs of infertile women in the global South.

Three research questions will form the backbone of the research:

  1. 1. Which theoretical perspectives support increased priority for the right of access to infertility care and how?
  2. 2. Which theoretical perspectives can contribute to shaping the contours of the right of access to infertility care, in general, and in particular for women in the Global South, and what are their implications?
  3. 3. What are the concrete state obligations to respect, protect and fulfil human rights, that can be derived from the human right of access to infertility care?

The main goal of the research is to provide some innovative theoretical angles that will strengthen the foundations of the right of access to infertility care in a gender-sensitive manner.
